About koto

More than 12 million creditworthy UK consumers are ignored by high street banks. koto offers them a unique credit product that is transparent with low, fixed fees and a best in class mobile app experience. Our founders built Ukraine’s 3rd most popular bank in just two years and have more than 2.8 million customers since they first launched in 2017.

Our Story

Koto’s mission is to take the fear and stress out of credit. The idea for koto began when our co-founder, Misha, first came to London and was unable to access credit and did not qualify for the most basic mobile phone contract. Despite his success as a Ukrainian entrepreneur and co-founder of Ukraine’s fastest-growing fintech, Monobank, Misha was rejected by both high street banks and electronics retailers. The problem? He had no UK credit history on which banks could make a credit decision.

The Problem

There are more than 12 million creditworthy consumers who, like Misha, are excluded by mainstream lenders. Customers with inconsistent income (the self-employed, for example), who are new to credit or the UK or who have an incident in their past credit history are left behind by big banks. These consumers, referred to by lenders as 'near-prime', have few options to meet their financial needs and none with neo-bank levels of functionality and flexibility.

Our Solution

Koto brings a prime product, experience, and service to near-prime credit customers. As the UK’s first consumer credit product built on e-money, koto offers current account functionality like direct debits, faster payments, Apple and Google Pay, and tools to track spending to credit.

Our Unique Competitive Advantages

Koto has a proprietary AI decisioning engine (brought from monobank) that uses alternative data (not captured by mainstream lenders) to make better lending decisions in favour of near-prime customers. Koto’s monobank DNA, expertise and track record of accurately assessing thin file customers for credit, and market leading user experience are some of the many factors that set us apart.

Our Plan

Koto is raising capital to acquire our first 50,000 users, train our AI credit risk systems, expand our operational capacity, refine our UK marketing, and grow our team.

  • The core idea and strategy behind our product is engagement with you. We have invested so much into User Experience and Design to ensure that people love using our cards, “Extra” and “Spread” not only because of the unique value and transparent pricing we provide to our target customers but also because of the emotional attachment that comes from the smooth experience of using Koto and fun interactions with the Cat in glasses.

That is why we decided to give you the chance to join our community and help shape koto's future while securing your share of our success.

  • Access to affordable finance is important. Existing lenders of all types are, rightly, focussing their efforts on supporting existing customers through the pandemic. This is leading to a lack of supply in the market and creditworthy near-prime customers, who already have fewer choices, will find new lines of credit increasingly difficult to access. As a new lender, koto is able to focus on meeting this demand that may not be addressed by traditional players. We have waited for the regulatory position to become clear before marketing, and now we’re ready to go! Every pound invested during this campaign will be used to establish Koto as the go-to provider for affordable credit.

  • A convertible note is an investment for equity in a company where shares will be issued at a future date. Usually the shares will be issued when the company completes a follow-on, or second part, of an investment round. A convertible allows a company to raise finance without setting a valuation - the valuation will be set by the subsequent investment round or at an agreed valuation on a longstop date. It is important to remember that investing in a convertible is the same level of risk as investing directly for equity in a startup company and your capital remains at risk. It is important that you read the summary of terms and the convertible document provided to you by Crowdcube.
